Backpacker Kystriksveien

4-day trip Kystriksveien (Trondheim - Bodø)

Day 2: Brønnøysund – Sandnessjøen – Lovund

The easiest way to travel between Brønnøysund and Sandnessjøen is by bus. Bus service several times daily.  Get more information under “Transport”.   The trip goes along highway FV17 and along the way you will pass Forvikgården Farm situated at the Forvik ferry landing.  Perhaps you will have time to stop by the splendid Coffee Brewery (i.e. kaffebrenneriet).

After arriving at Tjøtta the bus will drive by the WWII-era international cemetery and 20 min. later by the Petter Dass Museum.

On the approach to Sandnessjøen, the bus drives along the Seven Sisters “De Syv Søstre” mountain range.
The boat to Lovund departs from Sandnessjøen city center, near the bus station (just below Rica Hotel). The trip out to Lovund takes a couple of hours and is a pleasant experience in and of itself.

The island of Lovund is known for its large Puffin colony and for being one of the first places where the fish-farming (aquaculture) adventure got started in Norway.  Each day there are about 20 fully packed truckloads of Salmon being transported out into the world from Lovund.  Unemployment is non-existent on the island and the average age of 27 bears witness to the island’s young population.

You arrive at Lovund at about 18:15 so your time this evening is limited. We recommend prioritizing the Puffin Scree in order to observe the Puffins. The birds return from the sea during the evening and it’s best to watch them then.

Day 3: Lovund – Ørnes including Svartisen Glacier

This day begins early as you travel by boat from Lovund to Ørnes with one boat change at Onøy.  Departure (weekdays) is at 07:05 and arrival in Ørnes at 10:20.

Ørnes Hotel is located near the express boat dock and you can rent a car there in order to have convenient transport inland to Svartisen glacier and Glomfjellet Mountain. Alternatively, you can take the bus on weekdays from Ørnes at 10:20 (arrival 1040) and spend the night at Glomfjord Overnatting who will shuttle you to and from Svartisen.

If you want to take part in a glacial tour, you must take the boat from Holand at 11:00. This means that you will be on a tight schedule from the moment you depart Lovund in the morning until you arrive at Svartisen at 12:00.
A trip over to Svartisen generally takes about 3 to 4 hours. This includes the 10 min. boat trip across the fjord and about a 1-hour walk from the dock to the glacier. You can save some time by renting a bicycle at the dock.

Coming into close contact with the glacial ice is a fantastic nature experience and something entirely different from seeing it at a distance. The experience is enhanced when you join a guided glacial tour, and entails that you will use about 1 to 2 additional hours on your trip to Svartisen.

Day 4: Ørnes/Glomfjord – Bodø

The final day, and your trip continues from Ørnes/Glomfjord in the morning.  You depart from Ørnes at 10:20 via express boat and arrive in Bodø at 11:50.

If you get up early and wish to experience the Coastal Route by bus, there are northbound departures at 07:00 from Glomfjord and 07:30 from Ørnes. You arrive in Bodø at 10:00.
