Catherine Meuter: Træna and Helgeland summer 2014

Two girls from Switzerland visited the music festival Trænafestivalen in the summer of 2014. Wanting to explore the the area they ended up cycling from Sandnessjøen to the island Herøy and hiking the 858 meter high mountain Dønnmannen. This is there travel report from 5 days of adventure along the scenic road Kystriksveien.

Day 7, 15. july

HELGELAND BY BIKE AND FOOT

Today we want to go on top of the mountain Dønnamannen. The weather is hot and sunny, we are lucky again. We take our bikes and cycle about an hour to Hagen, which is a „village“ with only one house :)

While we start walking along the seaside we discover little nice beaches with white sand and turquoise water. After a while the path goes up towards the mountain. The lovely smell of the trees and bushes is in the air. We walk up along a little river and have a first break on a plateau. We enjoy the beautiful view on the oceon and many islands. The horizon looks quite bented and smoothly blends into the same blue of the sky. What a nice place to have lunch!

From there it goes up steap and steady. Donnamannen is famous for it‘s shape that shows a face of a lying man in it‘s profile. There are different paths going up to the nose, the lips and the chin. We decide to hike up to the nose, a pointy, offstanding peak. The mountain seems close but it turns out to be a challenge as the perspective of the surrounding mountains cheats the real hight. Infact, the walk to the top doesnt seeem to end.

As we amost reaching the top, some clouds turn up and it unexpectedly starts to rain. The athmosphere with the sudden fog is mysterious, but we are also a bit worried of not getting the deserved clear view after this long hike... Finally we are on the highest point of the noise. Fortunately we could enjoy the  breathtaking view in all directions from the 860 meter high peak. We see the endless sea and hundreds of little islands. Looking down from this offstanding peak we almost get a bit dizzy.

We get cold so we start to walk down. The rain does not stop and we are quiet tired when we get to
our bicycles. It takes about another hour to cycle back n the heavy rain. What a nice relief as we finally get back to our cozy little wooden house. We make some hot tea and pasta and enjoy the evening under the covers with a book.
